The Wildlife Management Area, or WMA as it's known can be a great place to bow hunt in the winter, provided that you don't mind long boat rides, water snakes, and chasing wounded and squealing hogs in the dark with a flashlight.
Ricky Aucoin and his buddy Randy Levingston went out to the Atchafalaya Delta WMA in December determined to stalk themselves up some big hogs, and that's exactly what they did. Randy was the one who got lucky and got off a shot with a 100 grain Muzzy arrow just before dark, but all three hogs disappeared into the dusk.
There were more of the critters out there in the dark rooting around and grunting, so things got a bit dicey, especially after Ricky and Randy were charged a couple of times. After about a half hour Ricky found the big hog, and then began the arduous task of getting it partially field dressed and back to the boat, then back to Morgan City.
Two and half hours later at 2 AM the hog was skinned out and ready for the freezer. All in all a good night's hunt!
