This is the second season that Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael has hit the street looking for an NFL head coaching job, and it’s not getting any easier. Pete jumped into an NFL feeding frenzy of coach hijacking and ship jumping, and the competition is getting steeper as the week goes by.
We can’t afford to lose him in the situation we’re in right now. Goodell had to approve his contract back when he signed, he knew in advance Carmichael would be shopping for a head coaching job at the end of the season. Why do you think Roger won’t let Payton come back early? Goodell doesn’t want him back until the other teams have grabbed any decent coach there is off the market.
By now Pete has probably already interviewed with the Chicago Bears for their head coaching job, but NBC’s Mike Florio just made Carmichael’s situation more complicated. Mike just broke a story at NBC about the Chicago Bears requesting an interview with the Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians for the same job Pete wants.
What are Pete’s chances now? Heck, it’s hard to say, and hard to compare the two guys. On the one hand Carmichael’s New Orleans Saints have a great record breaking offense, but how much of that was Pete, how much was Drew Brees, and how much was Sean Payton?
Bruce has the edge on Pete when it comes to head coaching experience, and that may tell the tale. When Chuck Pagano was away from the sidelines fighting leukemia Arians was on the sidelines leading the Colts to a 9-3 record as interim head coach.
Pete might not better start packing his winter clothes just yet.
