The New Orleans Hornets are dead, long live the Pelicans! First of all, even to ask why Pelicans owner Tom Benson decided to go with the new name is a “no-brainer”. As Tom said before the name “Hornets” has no meaning for him, but I imagine it’s much more than that. Tom Benson is the kind of hombre who won’t leave another man’s brand on his “stock”.
Tom Benson is “All New Orleans”, and “All Louisiana”. If he owns a business in Louisiana it will have to reflect and embrace Louisiana values, lifestyle and culture. Hell, you get stung by a hornet almost anywhere, but nowhere else in the country is the pelican as revered as it is in the State of Louisiana.
In fact, it could be said that in post-Katrina, and post-BP oil spill days the pelican ranks beside the New Orleans Saints as the foremost symbol of the “rebirth” of Louisiana. Me? I think it’s a damn good name. The fact that Tom Benson still owns the rights to the minor league baseball team name “Pelicans” made the decision a hell of a lot easier.
Heck, the crafty old rascal can even turn a profit by selling the name “Hornets” to Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan. What do I keep telling you guys? Tom didn’t just fall off the old turnip truck, LMwhodatAO™…… Get ready to don your new Pelican team colors, which are reported to be blue, gold and red.
I don’t know about you guys, but I love the new team name, the team colors, and that new Pelicans logo is one bad-azz logo!
